University of Huddersfield – Terrazzo Repair & Restoration
- Education
- Huddersfield, West Yorkshire
Project Overview
Q Flooring Systems was appointed by HBC Construction Limited, the principal contractor, to undertake a specialist terrazzo repair and restoration scheme within the historic Ramsden Building at the University of Huddersfield in August 2026.
The building itself has been standing since 1883, while the existing in-situ terrazzo has been in place since the early 1960s, making the restoration of the floor an important part of maintaining the character of the building.
The terrazzo required extensive repairs to damaged borders and cracked areas, with careful restoration techniques used to retain the character of the original floor while significantly improving its appearance and condition.

Scope of Works
- Repair of damaged and cracked in-situ terrazzo
- Restoration of damaged terrazzo borders
- Making good of over 70 redundant bolt holes
- Detailed preparation of existing terrazzo surfaces
- Diamond grinding and removal of surface imperfections
- Restoration and polishing to an 800-grade finish
- Detailed finishing to achieve a consistent appearance
The Result
The completed restoration successfully gave the existing terrazzo floor a new lease of life, with repaired areas carefully integrated into the original installation before being reground and restored. The finished floor was extremely well received by both HBC Construction Limited and the University of Huddersfield. The project demonstrates Q Flooring Systems’ expertise in specialist terrazzo repair and restoration, particularly within heritage and existing buildings where attention to detail and sympathetic workmanship are essential.
